Professional Development Plan
_
As
a human being, it is my goal to constantly strive for new goals and challenge
myself. I am constantly looking at problems from different angles, the positive
and negative impact and the ability my choices will have on my future. As an
educator, it is my job to be one step ahead of my students, to challenge them
and know what their goals are so that I may help them achieve those. As an
educator, my job is to push my students to think beyond what they see, hear and
do and reach for something that has yet to be done, yet to be accomplished and
yet to be discovered. As an educator, it is my goal to not only teach my
students, but allow my students to teach me. We are all learners and teachers
in this big world.
Along with being one step ahead of my students, my goals as an educator include continuing to learn the technology being presented to my students; the technology that is currently out as well as the technology that is on its way out to the next generation. By keeping my mind fresh, alert and aware of the constant changes in our world, I can better help my students adapt to those changes and learn how to implement them into their daily lives.
There are many educators out there who think that technology is moving too fast, that students are spending too much time in front of a computer or on a smart phone. I too thought that until I discovered just how educational some computer programs, internet applications and smart phone apps can be. With the discovery of these new web tools, I, myself have been able to implement them into my own life and take a look at how I could use them in my classroom. Yes, students still need to be able to read a book holding it, smelling the pages and turning the pages. Students still need to be able to use a pencil and pen and know what an eraser is for; but students also need to know about computer programs, writing applications, backspace buttons and escape keys.
Instead of hoping the internet goes away and we do not have to learn about it, we are best of embracing the next generation’s way of learning, as this is how our world’s history goes. As humans we are constantly moving forward, bettering our progress and creating new things. As an educator it is my goal to show my students that their future is bright, full of opportunity and with a click of a mouse or a swipe of the hand in front of a camera, their world can become a new adventure.
As an educator it is also my goal to foster the creativity of my students through forms of media of their choice as well as introducing them to forms of creativity they may not have known about. Will my next generation of students not know what it is like to sit in a theater and perform? I want to show them this. I want my students to know the past, present and future of creativity and help them embrace and show what they are thinking, feeling and seeing in their own unique ways. It is my goal as an educator to foster my students into being their own person.
Through learning new technological tools, search engines, web tools and presentation tools seen throughout my website one could guess that I too have learned how to cope with the new technology age. While learning how to run different programs and finding ways to incorporate technology into my classroom, I am one step closer to being the best teacher I can be. Another goal of mine is to continue to stretch my own creative thinking as I finish up my Master’s degree and even after I am done so that I can continue to challenge myself.
One life goal I have recently made through learning about all of these new tools is to create a series of lessons using different web tools to teach about Australia. I would like to create short lesson plans on different aspects of the culture, history, people, etc. Australia is something that has always been near and dear to me and being able to teach what I know about it has always been something I get excited about.
As I continue to grow as an educator my goals will continue to adapt, change and be added to. As that happens, I like to always leave my professional development plans open ended because we are always learning and changing and I’ve created enough goals to know that they are constantly being expanded into something larger than I first intended. That being said, I would like to continue to learn about the technological side of education as it becomes more and more a part of our daily lives. I would like to continue to create lessons and learning opportunities using these tools and I would like to continue to push myself along with my students to grow along with these tools.
