PBL-online.org
PBL-online.org is a
website with project-based learning in mind. It provides teachers with
resources to develop and manage high-quality projects for middle and high
school students. This website was created under the leadership of Buck
Institute for Education (which many have already reviewed) to teach teachers how
to design a project and plan standard-focused projects for students to stay
engaged. This website also allows for users to search for other projects and
contribute their own for the PBL-Online Collaboratory and Project Library.
It also allows users to learn the definition of project-based learning as well as review different research and web resources. PBL-online.org walks you through five steps to creating and organizing a project-based design. The design principles are as follows: #1 – Begin with the End in Mind This is where you can locate and read overviews on what you should consider before planning a project, how to develop those ideas, how to recognize the difference between a well designed project and an activity and how to carry out the project. #2 – Craft the Driving Question This section helps you develop your ideas o how to write a question to spark student interest as well as learning how to refine these questions. This is also where you can recognize good questions and understand how much you know about them. #3 – Plan the Assessment In this section you can take a look at how to match the project your students are doing to the type of assessment and rubric. You can learn the key steps to developing an assessment plan and then create your own. #4 – Map the Project This is where you begin to see how the whole project looks as far as analyzing the needs of your students, selecting the activity and estimating, preparing and planning for your projects’ success. You can then learn how to structure the project from beginning to end and take what you have learned and apply it. #5 – Manage the Process In this section you will review what skills you will need to successfully plan and execute the project as well as the keys kills to managing it. Within this site, you can sign up as an educator so that you can review other project based learning activities as well as sharing your own that you and your students come up with. You can use this site as a stepping stone to help your student get started with a topic and learn how to write the question, research and carry it out from beginning to end. This website, though it is a branch off of the Buck Institute for Education, is a great resource for teachers and students to understanding exactly what project-based learning is and what it looks like. This website has a FAQ section that is a great tool for explaining project-based learning, how to incorporate standards and why it should be used. It also explains how other teaching methods can be used within a project-based learning activity. | Video on PBL - The Gender Project

The Gender Project
(I will continue to work on getting this to embed, but I cannot find the code.) This is a video from PBL-online.org that shows how these types of projects are carried out through using their steps. This particular video is done by a school who wanted to study gender. |
